Category: golf

Background:

Founded in 1906, the Royal Golf Club of Belgium, or Ravenstein as it is better known, is one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in the country.

The project:

The brief was set out a couple of years ago to overcome repeated and prolonged attacks of anthracnose disease and to control relatively high silvery thread moss levels to greens. At that point creeping bentgrass composition was typically 35% with rest being annual meadow-grass.

Two years later creeping bentgrass together with some fescue and browntop bentgrass comprise over 90% of the grass composition to greens. Ball roll qualities were amongst the very best this autumn without artificial enhancements. This has been achieved by improving environmental conditions and by adhering to the Disturbance Theory without compromising playability. The generally warm summer temperatures and good light conditions have favoured the speed of transition.

Further enhancement of firmness is the challenge for the coming years.

Fairways prone to surface softness and light ponding are being addressed through an intensive sanding programme and suitably graded sand. Excellent progress has been made in that regard.

Conditions are being set for enhancement of sward quality through eventual overseeding with modern cultivars of bents and fescues as selective tree removal and fairway dryness progress.

The Results

Creeping bentgrass together with some fescue and browntop bentgrass comprise over 90% of the grass composition to greens.

Ball roll qualities are now amongst the very best without artificial enhancements.

Excellent progress has been made to reducing surface softness and ponding on the fairways.

Further enhancement of firmness is the challenge for the coming years.
