sports facilities

delivering sustainable sporting environments

We are a leading specialist in sports surface design and delivery with a global portfolio of projects, all backed by rigorous technical and functional excellence. We have worked extensively in both warm and cold climates  to create bespoke solutions. We design at every scale and every stage in the process, from vision and briefing to design, delivery and maintenance.

We have an interdisciplinary team with expertise in venue and surface design, masterplanning, construction, agronomy and strategic management. Our designs deliver futureproof, sustainable solutions for the design, construction and management of sports surfaces and infrastructure.

areas of expertise

Stadium and training facility design

As sports surface experts, we are specialists in managing the design of the surface, the stadia bowl, and supporting the design of the wider stadia infrastructure, in particular the roof design. We are fully equipped to assist with sport’s climatic and environmental challenges, having conducted extensive research into the design of technically complex, comfortable and sustainable stadia.

We use a robust, science-based approach to design. We provide detailed and practical advice on all elements of design that may have an impact on the playing surface. Our design hubs, in the UK and Australia, have directed the construction of over 180 exceptional quality stadium pitches in over 30 countries.

From the initial brief to completion of a project, our consultants and designers work with clients to understand budgets, constraints and stakeholder expectations. We will assist with technical, legislative and planning challenges and working with our integrated in-house CAD team, soils laboratory, planning application support services and research facilities. Our designs are tailor made to every project.

We have an unwavering commitment to in-house research and development, and industry body participation, to help direct our design services.

Tournament delivery

For over 90 years, we have been delivering tournaments and events of all sizes, all over the world. Specialising in natural, hybrid and artificial surfaces within football, rugby, cricket, equestrian, hockey, bowls and tennis, we have delivered tournaments at the highest level.

Our multi-disciplinary team works in partnership with clubs, sporting bodies and venues, throughout the complete tournament lifecycle. From the outset, our technical consultants will deliver bespoke feasibility studies, technical designs and will continue to provide services throughout the construction and build preparations for the event. We will ensure the final surface meets specification, and be present in the run up to, during, and after the tournament to fully manage and maintain the grounds.

Challenging environments are our speciality, having successfully developed the turf track at Riyadh Equestrian Club in 2019, where we continue to provide annual project management. We have masterminded the installation of pitches used for the last three FIFA World Cup tournaments, and for the last four years been pitch consultant advisors to all stadiums involved with the annual UEFA UEL and UCL Tournaments, the Euro 2020 tournament and the AFC Asia Cup, CAF and at Olympic Games.

Venue development

We start from the planning stage, taking a range of factors into account such as the surface uses, size, location, budget and level of performance, through to concept, schematic and detailed design. This is followed by construction management including documentation delivery, physical build, and ensuring the final concept delivered fully meets the client’s brief and objectives.

We can also work with venues on multi-use strategies for facilities, for example turning a world-class sports surface into a concert venue, and back again. Embedding sports stadia into a community and maximising usage for multiple sectors is key to a profitable, integrated venue.

UK clubs and grassroots sports

We work with local authorities, schools and other educational establishments to support the design, redevelopment, new build development and ongoing maintenance of all natural and artificial sports surfaces. Our technical design engineers, environmental engineers and agronomic consultants deliver single and multi-surface sites, together with our planning team and landscape architects who support the delivery of club amenities and surrounding built infrastructure.

Consultancy

Our consultancy team specialises in the design and management of green spaces within the sports sector, creating strategies for sports facilities and their surrounding infrastructure.

We deal with a wide range of requests from local authorities, schools, landscape architects and engineering consultancies, as well as stadium architects, golf courses, cricket grounds and racecourses.

From planning and design, right through to technical consulting from our experienced agronomists, we can provide support for a specific stage of a project or be a long-term partner.

Golf course architecture

Our golf course architects cover all areas of new course development, redevelopment and upgrades. Throughout the comprehensive concept to completion service, we work closely with our clients from the planning stage through design and to build.

Our work is bespoke and tailored specifically to our client’s requirements, and our ecologists ensure the development complements and enhances the natural environment.

Construction

STRI group operates internationally as a principal contractor, and in the UK our construction business Carrick Sports Construction can deliver the build phase of any project.

Sport and multi-use games areas (MUGAs) are at the centre of our business, and we are specialists in delivering sports facilities, changing and spectator facilities, access roads, car parks, as well as regenerating land for re-use, upgrading of existing surface and estate infrastructure, and the designing and building of brand new facilities.

Working as an interdisciplinary team we are able to ensure that our designs have the scalability and adaptability to meet the current and future needs of the client.

Sustainability (SuDS)

Incorporating SuDS into a sports application requires creative and technical confidence in order to challenge assumptions and deliver solutions that are cost effective, easy to install, easy to maintain and allow the facility to retain its usability and performance during play in wet conditions.

New methods of water re-use are a useful concept, and current thinking on incorporating water re-use into sports water drainage systems helps minimise the impact on the environment, lowers cost and optimises water management.

We have a straightforward approach to SuDS for sports application design and the starting point for each unique project is to assess the project specifics, project limitations and client expectations whilst considering the associated technical aspects.

Throughout the design creation we will regularly review the potential for incorporating sustainable techniques to reduce the overall carbon footprint and environmental impact associated with the solution.
