structural design

Designing sustainable structures

We deliver a broad range of professional services to develop the built environment. Our build and environmental divisions collaborate with our wider expert teams, and partners with 3rd party contractors and developers. Our services span the entire project lifecycle or can be tailored to the area you need specialist support.

Our environmental services are provided by our sister company, the Environmental Protection Group (EPG).

Our structural design services

Civil engineering

Civil engineers design solutions to complex problems and implement them, shaping the world we live in.

Specialising in groundworks, drainage, water management, irrigation, flood defence, and renovation designs, our design team is supported by technical, geo-environmental and construction engineers.

Our services include the delivery of feasibility studies, conceptual design, option assessment, specimen design, statutory procedures, public inquiry, detailed design, contract documents, site supervision and whole life asset management.

Earthworks design

Earthworks can be a significant cost in a development, and a constraint as to what can be achieved. Before construction begins, our geo-environmental team at our sister company EPG will assess the suitability of the land.

Sites may contain natural or man-made constraints to development, such as foundations from previous structures, or geo-technically and environmentally unsuitable materials. Re-profiling may also be required to provide suitable construction platforms.

Our earthworks designs identify and specify the required works to address these problems and provide cost-effective and sustainable solutions that prioritise the maximum, appropriate reuse of site materials.

Drainage modelling

The safe disposal of surface and foul water, and management of flood risk, are fundamental requirements for any new development. Hydraulic models enable a variety of ‘what if’ scenarios to be explored and are proving to be important tools in the development of strategies to deal with drainage issues.

To support the management and maintenance of these underground assets, our technical engineers produce drainage area plans and sewerage management plans for clients, including water companies, government, local agencies and developers.

Given each site has its own specific requirements, we can develop tailored drainage and flood management solutions for each site to achieve a clients’ objectives, complying with current design standards and policies. We design conventional sewer systems alongside a range of SuDS methods to suit the site characteristics and the clients’ landscaping objectives.

Surface water drainage design

A surface water drainage strategy investigates how surface water runoff from the site can be managed to comply with the requirements of local planning or government policies. Our water management design consultants are experts in offering cost effective SuDS and retro-fit SuDS designs.

Our design service offers solutions from RIBA stage 1 through to RIBA stages 6 and 7.

Structural waterproofing

The continued demand for building development space has seen increased incorporation of basements beneath buildings. Basements, particularly in cities, are expanding in depth and size with the space progressively being used for activities that are much more sensitive and susceptible to damp and water ingress.

Basements and other substructures can leak both during and after construction and the consequences of leaking substructures are numerous and invariably result in costs associated with remedial works, delays to construction and expenditure and disruption to the building operation after construction.

We will undertake robust risk assessments and deliver appropriate waterproofing design on behalf of all development stakeholders, taking into consideration a broad range of parameters that will impact on the overall development design.

Our CSSW qualified team offers a full design service including detailed risk assessments, desk studies, project specific details, sections and drawings and project support.

We are experienced in producing structural waterproofing designs to BS 8012 and NHBC chapter 5.4.
