As a CAD Technician you will join our Design team, predominantly supporting the delivery of our UK portfolio of sports facility and development projects.
Based at our head office in Bingley, you will work closely with our Design and Development teams, alongside engineers, project managers and specialist consultants, to develop coordinated technical designs from concept through to construction.
This is not solely a drawing production role. The successful candidate will be expected to develop their technical design capabilities and contribute to the development of General Arrangements, drainage systems, earthworks and levels designs, cross-sections, detailed construction build-ups and construction information.
Projects will range from grassroots and community sports facilities through to professional and elite sporting environments.
LOCATION:
Office-based at Bingley Head Office
WORKING HOURS:
Full time
Monday to Friday
08:45 – 17:00
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Preparing and developing General Arrangement (GA) drawings for sports facilities and associated infrastructure.
- Developing surface and below-ground drainage designs, including layouts, pipe networks, chambers, falls, levels and outfalls.
- Undertaking earthworks and levels modelling, including proposed surfaces, gradients, contours and cut-and-fill assessments.
- Preparing cross-sections, detailed construction build-ups and construction details for sports surfaces and associated infrastructure.
- Developing coordinated technical drawing packages from concept through to construction.
- Interpreting and working from topographical surveys, architectural layouts and other engineering information.
- Coordinating sports surfaces, drainage, earthworks, levels and associated infrastructure with other project disciplines.
- Working alongside the Design and Development teams to develop practical, coordinated and buildable technical solutions.
- Updating designs in response to client comments, coordination requirements and project development.
- Ensuring drawings and technical information are produced accurately and in accordance with STRI standards.
- Managing drawing revisions and supporting the timely delivery of project design information.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in a civil engineering, sports facility, drainage, infrastructure, land development or multidisciplinary design environment.
You should have:
- Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD.
- Experience using Civil 3D for levels, surfaces, earthworks and/or drainage design.
- Experience producing General Arrangement drawings, cross-sections, construction build-ups and detailed construction information.
- A good understanding of drainage design, earthworks, levels, gradients and falls.
- Ability to interpret topographical surveys and existing site information.
- Understanding of cut-and-fill principles and site level coordination.
- An understanding of construction materials and how designs translate into practical and buildable solutions.
- Strong technical drawing and detailing skills.
- Good communication, organisation and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage workload across multiple projects.
- A willingness to learn and develop within a multidisciplinary Design team.
- Experience with Revit, Navisworks and BIM-led project environments would be advantageous but is not essential.
- A degree, HNC/HND, apprenticeship or equivalent professional experience in Civil Engineering, Construction, CAD or another relevant technical discipline is preferred.
SPECIALIST SPORTS EXPERIENCE:
Previous experience in sports-surface or Field of Play design is desirable but not essential.
STRI’s specialist consultants and Design Leads will provide the technical and agronomic expertise associated with sports surfaces. The CAD Technician will support the development of this specialist information into coordinated General Arrangements, drainage designs, earthworks and levels models, cross-sections, construction build-ups and detailed drawing packages.
Training will be provided in specialist sports surface and Field of Play design, including sports pitch construction, drainage, irrigation, earthworks, levels, material profiles and associated infrastructure.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
This is an opportunity for a CAD Technician to develop their technical and design capabilities within a specialist sports design environment, working across a diverse portfolio of predominantly UK-based projects.

The role provides opportunities to develop beyond traditional CAD production into Civil 3D, drainage design, earthworks, levels modelling and broader technical design responsibilities, with continued training, mentorship and professional development.
The role is based within STRI’s Design team in Bingley, West Yorkshire, with periodic travel to project sites across the UK.
