Sandylands is a sports and leisure facility located in Skipton, North Yorkshire. The facilities include two grass cricket pitches, a main grass football pitch with further multi-sport pitches and three main grass rugby pitches. It is also home to two indoor sports halls, a fitness centre, four squash courts, a shooting range, a floodlit all-weather pitch, five hard surface tennis courts and one padel court, and various associated club houses and pavilions.

STRI was appointed by North Yorkshire Council to deliver a masterplan to guide future growth and development of Sandylands as a sports hub in the district. The masterplan aims to bring together the different sports organisations, clubs and owners to facilitate the enhancement of the existing facilities, explore the introduction of new sports and facilities, improve the user experience and be used to secure sources of funding and thereby help to reinforce and futureproof an already valuable community asset. It will set out the vision for Sandylands, to guide its growth and evolution into the future.

STRI was appointed by Leeds United Football Club to deliver comprehensive pitch testing and agronomic consultancy throughout the 2024/25 season. As a FIFA-accredited organisation for natural grass surfaces and fully qualified BASIS and FACTS consultants, STRI’s technical expertise were engaged to help ensure the pitch met elite performance standards.

Regular quantitative pitch performance testing was carried out with the results being used to inform the club’s agronomic maintenance strategy. This included full FIFA quality testing as well as bespoke assessments tailored to Leeds United’s specific needs. Additional tests included water infiltration rate analysis, compaction severity measurements using a long-stem French penetrometer, and chemical analysis of the rootzone to evaluate soil nutrient availability.

Monthly matchday testing took place at Elland Road, with detailed reports delivered to the grounds team. These reports helped assess how match week/day maintenance inputs affected pitch characteristics and playing performance. The data collected throughout the season was also shared with player performance staff ahead of fixtures and used to guide long-term decision-making.

Tenby golf club is an 18-hole course on the southwest coast of Wales. Due to its location, the course is frequently subjected to storm damage and coastal weather, and the club realised they needed to take rapid action before losing parts of the course to the elements.

Aspire Sports Turf, a joint venture between STRI and Aspire Zone Foundation was launched in 2015 to bolster the sports turf expertise in Qatar. In the months following the launch, AST were awarded the design, construction supervision and maintenance supervision of all pitches for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
